IOWA FIELD HOCKEY SWEEPS ACC CHALLENGE

Capital "C" Congratulations to Lisa Celluci and the Hawkeye field hockey team.  Iowa's 11th ranked women opened the season big time.  Went on the road and dropped 7th ranked Wake Forest in Winston-Salem.  A come from behind win in sudden death OT.  First year Hawkeye Meg Tebben tied the score with 51:34 on the clock.  Another first year Hawk, Reine van Hoof scored the winning goal 15 minutes later at the 66:46 mark.  The box score was impressive.  Iowa out shot the Deacs 13-7, dominated with 3-0 penalty corners, and only needed 2 save's to Wake's 8.  Four Hawks played their first game in this impressive road win.

Still in North Carolina, Iowa upset the 2nd ranked North Carolina Tar Heels the day after downing the Deacons.  The Hawkeye defense does what Hawkeye defenses do, domination.  Iowa's outstanding goal keeper Abby Johnson had nine saves.  The Hawks Frederique van Cleef tied the game in the third quarter, after Iowa trailed for nearly 16 minutes, and had never led.  Rachel Herbine scored the winning goal three minutes later.  Iowa's D dug in and held its lead until the final gun, the Kirk Ferentz MO to fans of Iowa football.

Frederique van Cleef was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week today.  The Hawks should shoot up the polls after two top ten road wins.  Reine van Hoof was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.  Update tomorrow.

The Hawks have their home opener this Friday at 3:30.  Playing 1-0 Lehigh.  Lehigh defeated Long Island University last Friday.
